Three –time Emmy winner Sam Barker brings an impressive 20 year resume to the Darkfire Lighting Design team. Born and educated in the UK, Sam lists his college degree as “Acey Decy Lighting with Honors” and his formative job experience as newspaper delivery boy and pizza restaurant manager. Influenced by mentors Tim Phelps, James Barker and Paul Bell Sr, he took the familiar path from rental house to on-set lighting technician, best boy, gaffer and lighting director. Showing his hands-on background, he lists his essential tools as a tape measure and a Sekonic light meter. His favorite technology is the Vectorworks Spotlight software.
Sam’s diverse television career has included variety television, awards shows, talk shows, game shows, music and live events. Currently he is in his third award- winning season as Lighting Director on The Voice which he calls “the most technically challenging show I have worked on.”
As Lighting Director his credits include FOX Sports Super Bowl 51 (2017), Elton John Live at Tower Records (2016) and the 13th Annual ALMA Awards for MSNBC in 2013. His work as a gaffer is no less varied, from George Lopez Tall, Dark and Chicano for HBO (2008), the 8th Annual Celebrity beach Bowl (2014). Sam’s team mentality and leadership skills are put to the test every day in the complex demanding shows for which Darkfire is famous. “Oscar (Dominguez) sets the bar very high – that’s what I love – being part of a creative team on a project,” says Sam, refusing to concede that any aspect of the job that makes him crazy. “I will say that long days away from home and family can be tiring.” Sam is married with three children and might one day play golf in the unlikely event of a slowdown in his work schedule.
